The club were founded in 1974 when three men sat round a table for the first ever committee meeting and formed Helensburgh Hockey Club.

Little did those three men — John Andrews, John Steele and Ravi Khosla — know that their meeting would result in a club which would flourish and 40 years later would still be one of the most popular clubs in the town.

Peter Smith was named the club’s first captain before John Steele took over the role and guided the side to victory in the second division in their second season.

With the majority of the squad coming from the navy and the club using the navy’s pitch, Commodore Cooke from Faslane was named the club’s first president.

The team were relegated from the first division in the 78-79 season but they bounced straight back up, winning the second division title again. By this time, a second team had been formed and Peter Cox elected as the new president.

The West District, which contained just two leagues when Helensburgh first entered, had increased to five leagues by now and the second team joined there.

The club’s next accolade came when Brian Caulfield captained the side that won the second division title again, in the 82–83 season, while off the pitch that season Eric Anderson was voted in as club president.

From the early 80s to the mid-90s, the club also had a successful ladies section, during which time they won the first division title and went on to play national level hockey.

The late 80s was a hazy period in the club’s history, with records missing from this time. At some point, however, John Andrews was elected club president, position which he still holds today.

The late 80s saw the demise of the second team while the club struggled through a difficult patch in the 90s, however, that all changed thanks to Andy Richardson.

Richardson held the position of first team captain for over 10 years and along with the help of Brian Caulfield, Barry Cox and a few others, they brought the club to where it is today.

The second team started again, in the 99-00 season with a third team soon following in 04-05. Over the years, the club has played on various pitches, from the blaze across from the Faslane Naval Base, to the Lomond School pitch and the club are now regulars at Hermitage Academy.

Along with various pitches, they have also had various clubhouses, ranging from the Ardencaple Hotel and the Garth Bar to the rugby club — while they are currently based at Craighelen Squash and Lawn Tennis Club.

Helensburgh Hockey Club have experienced a great journey over the last 40 years, a journey full of highs and lows but most importantly it does not look like a journey that will be ending anytime soon.
