Ciaran, who will be 17 in December, was in devastating form from the outset with a combination of powerful serves and hard hitting groundstrokes. It wasn’t until the second set that Niall put up any kind of resistance when he led briefly but it was too little too late as Ciaran stepped up a gear and saw off the challenge.

In the ladies final Katie Hope, who has won the title more times than any other female at the club, had to retire through severe tennis elbow at one set all giving the title to a very reluctant Alison Fotheringham.

In the men’s doubles top seeds Bobby Kerr and Ciaran Losh retained their title with a great win over hard hitting number two seeds David McCowan and Stephen Lewis.

The opening set saw Stephen and David save five set points before winning it in the tie break. Bobby and Ciaran soon got their act together and dominated the next two sets 6–2, 6–3.

In the men’s over-55’s singles Mike Bews used all his years of experience to see off a spirited challenge from Andrew Morison to win 2-0.

In the ladies over-55 singles Janette Howieson was up against first time entrant Janette Green. Howieson was never in trouble as her experience saw her comfortably beat her opponent 2-0.

The men’s over-55 doubles was the closest match of the tournament when Jim McDowall and Ian Parlane were up against Mike Bews and Ian Evans.

At 1-1 apiece the match went into the champions tie break and soon Ian and Jim were in trouble as Ian and Mike took an early lead with a change of tactics.

Mike and Ian decided that their groundstrokes were more effective than their net play so both players stayed at the back of the court. The tactics were working as they went into an early lead but Jim and Ian managed to fight back and it was neck and neck at 9-9 points each. The match would be decided by the pair who could win by two clear points. Jim served at 9–9 and a powerful return from Mike to Jim’s backhand saw the ball hit the top of the net to let Ian serve at match point.

The left hander knew all he had to do was to ensure that his serve was well placed and Mike would do the rest at the net. The over-55 category may have lost some of their power but they still have years of experience and Ian’s serve landed exactly where he wanted it to and produced the desired return as Mike was able to hit a winning volley giving the pair the title.

In the over-55’s mixed doubles Ian Parlane and Janette Howieson narrowly beat Iain McLaren and Janette Green. Iain then teamed up with Carol Bews to beat Alison Fotheringham and Ian Parlane to win the over-40’s mixed doubles. The prizes were presented by Elspeth McLean.

The event continues this week with the men’s over-40’s singles and doubles taking place along with the boys final.
