HELENSBURGH wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid retained his crown at the Open de la Baie de Somme in Rue, France, with a straight sets win over Sweden’s Stefan Olsson.

The win was Reid’s third ITF 1 Series men’s singles title of 2014.

World number three, Reid, returned to Rue knowing he wouldn’t have to face the top ranked player, Japan’s Shingo Kunieda, who wasn’t in this year’s field.

Reid was drawn against his doubles partner and world number one ranked junior Alfie Hewett in the last eight, claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win to advance to a semi-final against Belgian world number five Joachim Gerard.

Unbeaten in 11 matches and two tournaments before meeting Reid, Gerard provided a sterner challenge, but Reid recovered from 5-3 down in the opening set to go on and seal a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory.

That set up a showdown with Olsson and the Swede was ahead in both sets, leading 3-2 in the first and 4-3 in the second set.

However, Reid regained the momentum in time to win both and the match 6-3, 6-4.

He said: “It’s a great feeling to defend my title this week, every player I came up against was confident and in good form, so to finish this week with the trophy again and without dropping a set is a great achievement for me.

“I’m looking forward to some good training now and taking this form into the Doubles Masters in early November, then the Nottingham Indoors and the NEC Masters back on home soil later next month.” Reid will partner Frenchman Michael Jeremiasz in next month’s UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters in California as he seeks to retain the title he won partnering Houdet in 2013.

Houdet was on the opposite side of the net alongside Gerard in the doubles final in Rue as Reid and Hewett sought to extend an impressive sequence that had seen them beat London 2012 silver medallists Frederic Cattaneo and Nicolas Peifer of France 6-3, 6-2 and two-time Doubles Masters champion Scheffers and Ronald Vink 6-0, 6-2.

Reid and Hewett made a brave attempt at extending the Roland Garros champions and top seeds in the second set of the final, but Gerard and Houdet eventually took the title 6-1, 6-4.

Reid added: “It’s been high quality tennis from both me and Alfie this week and Alfie is very confident at the moment after some good results, so I was pleased with my straight sets win in the quarter-finals.

“The doubles has been incredible. We’ve come up against three top experienced teams and totally dominated two of the matches.”
