It has been a disappointing start to the campaign with the club sitting bottom of the table.

Helensburgh started well from push back and retained possession but Hillhead looked the sharper early on.

They pressed Helensburgh straight away and already the defence was struggling.

Early forays into Hillhead’s half were few and of little effect. Hillhead managed to get the early goal as well, with some neat play the striker smashed the ball home for a 1-0 lead.

The home side were all too used to going a goal down but unlike normal, the heads did not drop and they actually sparked into life after the goal.

G.Caulfield and Kennedy were running the show at the back with McGregor in behind to mop up any mistakes and it looked to carry on throughout the team as Black, B.Cox and J.Caulfield were all creating chances.

Burgh managed to create a wonderful goal mid-way through the first half with several players linking well.

Kennedy started the move with a pass out to Court on the wing, he took on a defender before finding Kennedy again — his first time pass to Black was excellent.

Black helped it on its way to B.Cox in the D who calmly slotted it under the onrushing Hillhead keeper.

With Helensburgh back in the game, they looked to push on and really take control of the game. Hartopp was having an excellent game on the wing and was dazzling defenders with his runs.

When Hillhead had the ball they were harassed and it was quickly stolen back each time. Burgh got a second goal before half-time with a poorly executed short corner that turned out well.

Black fed Hartopp at the top of the D who was forced wide with the ball. He found J.Cox at the top of the D and the striker cleverly slipped the ball to Kennedy — who got his third goal of the season and put Helensburgh in front. The home side managed to hold on till half-time and took in a well earned lead.

The second half started poorly for Helensburgh as they struggled to get hold of the ball.

Hillhead were pushing high and it was stretching the Burgh defence. Wain’s heroics in goal were keeping Helensburgh in it. Numerous key and what seemed unattainable saves were made by the goalkeeper who was certainly the difference in the second half.

As the home side tried to get a foot-hold, a number of injuries started taking their toll but Burgh weren’t fazed.

They pressed on with Jamie and brother Gordon Caulfield pulling the strings in midfield.

An unlucky bounce for Hillhead left the ball to young Hartopp who couldn’t miss. He coolly sent the ball home to take Burgh into the lead — much to the jubilation of the observing fans.

Helensburgh continued to struggle though and were really holding on late into the game. Numerous Hillhead short corners were saved by Wain as he personally was doing his bit to keep Burgh in the game but sadly it wasn’t enough.

The Hillhead team eventually found a way through the Helensburgh defence and slotted home to bring the score level.

Time was out for Helensburgh who had played an excellent game overall but had ultimately let themselves down. However a crucial point was gained and hopefully the team can push on in the new year and earn their place in the West District Division One.
