With two teams facing the drop and Burgh set to face relegation rivals Irvine next week, the season is set to come down to the wire.

Uddingston took the early inititative. The new back line of G Caulfield, McWilliam, McGregor and Kennedy were under early pressure but coped well.

The first short corner of the day was easily saved by stand in keeper Stewart and from then Helensburgh’s ‘A’ game arrived.

They played some wonderful hockey which lead to the first goal. Starting off down the right, Burgh switched the ball round the back via Kennedy to McWilliam who had space to run into. The defender then produced a fine sweeping pass to B Cox in the D whose lay-off to J Caulfield was perfect for the striker to convert.

J Caulfield got another from a short corner that wasn’t exactly executed to plan but the striker was there to snap up the loose ball and squeeze it under the oncoming keeper.

J Cox then showed his class, after neat interchange between himself and Chambers before the striker slotted the ball into the top corner from a tight angle to take it to 3-0. Young Chambers was having an impressive game and showed excellent maturity on the ball.

Helensburgh got a fourth before half-time, some good play between Black and J Caulfield sent Fairbairn off down the right. His ball in found Hartopp, his shot rebounded off the keeper and the young star managed to somehow squeeze the ball under the oncoming pads and prod the ball home. Burgh went in at the break 4-0 up.

The away side scored a neat short corner early on in the second half but Burgh fought back. An almost carbon copy of his first ever goal, Cameron Dye showed his promise with a well-executed goal. Black fired the ball into the D and Dye was there just to guide it home. At 5-1, Burgh may of taken the foot off the pedal. Two more short corners, which could have been dealt with, were fired home and the final score ended at 5-3.

With the second team sitting fourth in the table, they welcomed the Western Wildcats at the weekend — with Burgh running out 4-3 winnners Burgh started well, pushing the ball down the wings and generating some good attacking moves, which forced Western onto the defensive.

An early run down the right wing started with J Murphy at the back, moving the ball onto T Barton who carried it at pace down the wing before firing into the D to S Murphy and C Dye who were denied a goal by a strong defence. This was remedied a few minutes later when C Fairbairn showed his pace and weaved through the defence to slot his first goal past the keeper and put Helensburgh 1-0 up.

Keeping up the pressure saw a strong midfield duo of J Caulfield and P Moore continue to push the ball up to the Western end, slotting it through to C Fairbairn who took the ball across to the right had side of the D before executing a fine strike and firing the ball past the keeper for his second goal.

A couple of the experienced Western players put their skill to good use, building up a move from midfield and taking Helensburgh by surprise. A fine shot from the top of the D caught the defence out and rest the score to 2-1.

Fairbairn was on form though and using the speed of Barton and Chambers to assist him, assailed the defence with a number of fast attacks resulting in his third goal and a hat-trick before half time. In the second half Helensburgh relaxed, confident of a victory. Western got an early goal from a short corner and another from an uncharacteristic mistake in the Helensburgh defence putting the score at 3-3. Helensburgh regrouped and put attack after attack into the Western end, with Murphy and Dye taking a number of shots at goal. The Western keeper held strong and on a break in the last 5 minutes Western used a long ball to set up a two man break in the Helensburgh end and a final goal to make it 4-3.
