HELENSBURGH Athletics Club junior athletes showed they will be ones to watch in the coming years with an impressive showing at the Grangemouth Athletics Stadium.

The Burgh prospects were competing in match two of the Central and Southern Scotland Athletics League on Sunday, June 28.

In the under-11 category four girls took part. Megan Minshull and Megan McAllister were first up in the 150m sprint, followed closely by the long jump.

Evelyn Dennison and Lara Kinloch took on the longer distance of 600m with Lara making a strong start, leading most of the way before being overtaken on the final straight and finishing in third position. All four girls took part in the 4x100m relay to complete their day.

With only two under-11 boys available, Matthew Wright and Matthew Palmer competed in the 150m and long jump, with Matthew Wright also taking on the 600m later in the day.

Catie MacGillivray and Amelia Murphy braved the 70m hurdles with Catie finishing strongly in her first competitive hurdles event. Amelia went on to run 200m and Catie took on a less favoured throwing event in the discus.

Two other under-13 girls, Sophie Michie and Amirah Hassan, had a busy day. Sophie competed in dual throwing events of discus and shot putt along with a 200m sprint. Amirah ran the 1200m, threw the shot putt and finished in an impressive second place in her high jump. All four girls finished their day in the 4x100m relay.

The under-13 boys team consisted of Callum Gray, Hamish Patterson and Calum MacGillivray. Callum Gray jumped in both high and long jump events and ran in the 200m.

Calum MacGillivray competed in the varied events of discus, long jump and had a strong finish in the 1500m whilst Hamish had a good run in the 200m and completed a gruelling 1500m in the hottest part of the day.

Chlöe Murphy and Jennifer McBride made up the under-15 girls team. Jennifer threw a second personal best in two weeks in the shot putt and also gave a strong performance in the 200m.

Chlöe threw a strong shot, ran in the 200m and battled through the heat in the 1500m race.

The under-15 boys team were down on numbers meaning the boys had three events each. Both Finlay Gray and William Wright had good runs at 200m and 1500m, with Finlay settling in with the leaders for the whole race and maintaining a blistering pace.

The final 150m was a sprint battle, Finlay was narrowly edged into third place. William also competed in the long jump and Finlay in the shot putt.

At the under-17 age group Melissa Robinson had a successful day running a strong 200m, coming third in the high jump and winning her 1500m, leading from the front the whole race.

Joe Barton had a busy final part of the day running in the 1500m, throwing in the javelin and competing in his first ever triple jump event.

Whilst training continues the competition season takes a short break for the holidays with the final competition taking place on August 2.
