HELENSBURGH’S Gordon Reid will bids for his second Grand Slam title this week at the US Open in New York after winning his latest title with Frenchman Stephane Houdet in St Louis at the weekend.

Reid and Houdet returned to the scene of their first triumph together in 2012 at the USTA Wheelchair Championships, as they extended their unbeaten winning streak to 17 matches across six tournaments. Reid has subsequently returned to his career best world doubles ranking of number two this week.

The top seeds raced to a 6-0, 6-0 win over American duo Larry Keeter and Paul Moran in their opening match and produced another confident performance to negotiate a tough semi-final against French third seeds Michael Jeremiasz and Nicolas Peifer 6-4, 6-3.

Thereafter they were awarded a walkover ahead of their scheduled final against fourth seeds Gustavo Fernandez and Maikel Scheffers due to illness for their one of their opponents.

Reid has now won doubles titles at Super Series level, the tier of tournament immediately below Grand Slam, at the Japan Open, the British Open and the USTA Championships this season, but his singles challenge in St. Louis came to an end against world number six Fernandez in the semi-finals.

The Scot dropped just one game in each of his first two matches against American and Korean opposition en route to the last four before the Argentinian edged through to the final 7-6, 6-4. Reid said: “It was a decent week overall as preparation for New York. Although I didn’t get the results I was hoping for in singles I felt I played some good quality tennis throughout and just need to up the consistency on that at the Grand Slam.

“It was also fantastic to win the doubles title again here with Stephane. That’s my third Super Series doubles title in a row so we can go into the US Open feeling confident after extending our unbeaten run.” The US Open wheelchair tennis Grand Slam begins in New York on Thursday, with Reid bidding to add to his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June, where he won the men’s doubles alongside Japan’s Shingo Kunieda. Reid was runner-up in the men’s doubles in New York in 2014.
