LOMOND AND HELENSBURGH RUGBY THIS week, the Lomond and Helensburgh sides played Jordanhill School.

The Lomond Helensburgh S1 side made a flying start, scoring immediately from the kick-off. Tries were scored at regular intervals by Lomond Helensburgh, as there was very little resistance given by Jordanhill. A total of nine tries and six conversion were scored making the final score Helensburgh and Lomond 33-0 Jordanhill.

The S2s lost a close match 31-24. It was a hard fought game between two evenly matched sides. L and H worked hard in the forwards, but some missed tackles allowed Jordanhill to score some break away tries from missed tackles in the backs. The Lomond tries were scored by Andrew McBean, Connor McCabe, Douglas King and Cammy Murray. This was a game that the boys could have won and let slip away. Some work to be done in the defensive line but if we improve this and continue to play well with the ball in hand we will do well.

L and H under-15s started strongly with four tries in the first 10 minutes, courtesy of good running from Angus Guy and Nick Fish. L and H continued their early dominance right through to half time, taking control of the scrum making the half time score 47-0. Jordanhill looked a lot more eager and disciplined at the start of the second half scoring after 11 minutes. However L and H once more took control of the game with four of their own tries making the final score 75-7.

Try scorers were Guy (6), Fish (4), and Angus McLeod with his first try for the L&H team. Guy with six conversions from six and Adam Scott with five from six.

The under-16s played with a squad of 13 against Jordanhill this weekend. Playing with seven forwards and six backs, Lomond started well with Ormiston and Allwood prominent in the tackle.

Two quick tries by Simmons, converted by Caskie, set the tone of the game. The forwards set a solid platform at both line out and scrum allowing the strong running Kennedy to make good ground into Jordanhill territory. Quick thinking from Caskie, saw his cross field kick caught unchallenged by Chown who scored in the corner.

The final play of the half was Jordanhill crossing the line for their only try of the half. A similar second half saw further tries from Kennedy (two) and one from Caskie. A thoroughly deserving win with improving player performances throughout the team.

The Jordanhill under-1818 side failed to produce a full team on Saturday, arriving with only seven men. The L and H side used this opportunity to play a development game, mixing the Jordanhill side into their own squad. Playing 12-a-side, the game created lots of space for the backs and forwards to practise their moves. The Jordanhill lads played well, but in the end, it was the L and H side that came away with the win.

Tries from, Fraser Leven, Matthew Holland, Joshua Green, William Hayward, Eoin MacDonald, Jamie Higgins, Fraser Fulton, Crawford Brown, Matthew Bradbury and Robert Fraser made for a very exciting, quick paced game.

Hockey Reports Last weekend, six hockey teams played against Hutchesons’ Grammar School. The first XI was a cup match and Lomond had home advantage. Even from the start of the match, Lomond were quiet on the pitch and looked nervous against their strong rivals.

It did not take long for the Glasgow team to dominate the match with at least four of their players involved in the West District Under-18 squad. Despite Lomond’s efforts to prevent any goals, the visitors had soon reached a tally of five goals by half-time. Lomond’s overall possession was not very consistent and the players were forcing the ball through the opposition.

Kirsty Scott had made some excellent saves, but Hutchie continue to take the rebounds and played the ball round the keeper. In the second half, Lomond started to turn things around and started to believe in themselves. Katie McGlinchey made some crucial tackles with Virginia Etchells and Josie Sclater working very effectively in the midfield.

The team were able to find Morven Rowan up front who made some excellent runs up into the attacking area and won a few penalty corners for the team. It was Morven who created the scoring opportunity with some accurate passing from Sally Ram and Cara Wilson which allowed Josie to score her first goal of the season. Once Lomond had scored, the team continued to play better possession hockey and the match was a far more even contest. Hutchesons’ did manage to score from a well taken penalty corner and the match finished 6-1 to the visitors.

Despite the score, the second half had been an exciting one for the spectators and Lomond’s first XI realised that if they had started the match the way they had finished the match the score might have been very different.

Second XI: The second XI travelled to Glasgow to play and won 3-0. It was Rowan Clark who managed to find the target in the first half and the team worked very well together. The hockey was fast and skilful and Rona Wilson also managed to find the target after some strong attacking play.

Lomond’s defence were kept busy and Ellie Summers continue to dominate the match with great commitment towards the ball and taking the free hits early out of the defending area. Before the final whistle, Rowan scored her second goal with some lovely team play.

Third years: The third years both travelled to Glasgow with the ‘A’ team winning 2-0 with some great attacking play from the squad. Nadiyah Hassan and Grace Laverty were both on the score sheet from their striking positions and it was Molly Keating who continued to show her tenacious play from midfield. In the ‘B’ match, Lomond drew 1-1 with Jasmin wells making a great run on the right and slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. The whole team worked hard on the pitch and it was Hannah Williams who was voted ‘player of the match’ for her consistent defensive play.

Second years: The second years lost 1-0 with Rachel Macleod playing in goals for the team. The match was evenly balanced for most of the time and Becky Trotter was able to win the ball and distribute it wide to her team mates very effectively. Elizabeth Homewood, captain for Lomond worked extremely hard throughout the match and between Isabel Roberts and Lucy Morrison they were able to feed the ball up to the strikers.

First years: The first years were up against a confident Hutchesons’ team and they had to work hard throughout the game. Emma O’Neill made some saves in goals and despite losing 2-1 the game was end to end. Emily Harkness, Miranda Burnett and Sophie Morrison all tried to distribute the ball from the midfield allowing Ava Keating, Amirah Hassan and Charlotte Ingle chances to attack the game. In the second half it was Molly Muggoch who scored Lomond’s only goal, but the final score was 2-1 to the visitors. Sophie, captained the team, and was awarded ‘player of the match’ for her attacking and defensive play.
