The match was played in tricky conditions as gale force winds battered the country at the weekend, but Burgh battled to victory against a side who had beaten them 49-7 in October.

It was only the second defeat of the season for high flying Accies but despite the odds being against the home side, Cashmore insists he was quietly confident his side could get a result.

He told Advertiser Sport: “In terms of what the players had to do I would say it was the best performance of the season.

“It wasn’t a day for fancy rugby, the defence was excellent as was our decision making.

“The weather can be a great leveller and we had a great squad to select from. The boys played well, I was very proud of every one of them. They have that in their locker to raise their game against the better sides.

“I wasn’t massively surprised by the result, because of the conditions and the squad we had I was quietly confident we could win.” The league table now makes for better reading for Cashmore whose side face a trip to bottom side Kilmarnock on Saturday, before welcoming Newton Stewart to Ardencaple in the following week’s game.

With at least two games in hand over every other team in the league things are looking up for Burgh.

Meanwhile the club are also still awaiting a date for their appeal to be heard by the S.R.U on the point deduction they were handed earlier in the season for not playing a fixture.

He said: “We will lose five or six of our squad now because they are going back to university or have work commitments.

“Kilmarnock are bottom of the league, historically we haven’t done well against sides that are bottom, I think it is a psychological thing.

“I’ve set the players a target of winning these two games and if we do that we will certainly be safe and looking at fifth or sixth place.” The match was played in tricky conditions as gale force winds battered the country at the weekend, but Burgh battled to victory against a side who had beaten them 49-7 in October.
