The match had been in doubt after heavy rain overnight and in the morning. The pitch cut up heavily during the warm up and was a sign of things to come during the match with the conditions playing a big role in the style of play implemented by both sides.

Playing against the wind in the first half was always going to be tricky for Burgh. An error strewn start from both sides saw mainly territorial kicking. The Burgh backs were up to the challenge defensively, forcing knock-ons when Glens made inroads through midfield before looking to play the ball wide.

In their eagerness to keep putting pressure on the Glens backs Helensburgh conceded the first scoring opportunity through the backs not retreating behind the back foot before moving forward again. With the penalty right in front of the posts there was never much doubt that the Glens 10 would make it 3-0.

Both packs worked hard to retain the ball, fatigue through this hard work possibly led to a number of penalties to both sides. Burgh were being punished by the wind and the accurate boot of the Glens 10 from these penalties.

Glens had a lineout on the Helensburgh five metre line and set up a driving maul, one of their main weapons of the season going by the previous encounter, some exceptional defence by the pack lead to a turnover with Sterry clearing to just outside the 22 metre line. From the ensuing lineout Burgh’s backs were over eager again and over stepped the offside line giving Glens another chance to take three points. The kick was slightly further out than the last one but was duly converted nonetheless taking the score to Glens 6 Burgh 0 after 25 minutes.

Minutes later Helensburgh knocked the ball on trying to re-gather giving Allan Glens a scrum inside the 22. A solid scrum lead to Glens trying a planned backs move that was almost intercepted by Rogers, leading to another scrum for Glens. This time they went for the pushover from 10 metres out and were successful with their eight touching down over the line. The conversion was also successful from under the posts. Glens 13 Burgh 0.

Not long after the kick off another Helensburgh knock-on led to one more scrum for Glens inside the 22. A planned back row move led to the scrum-half scoring — very hard for the away side to defend from not very far out, conversion was unsuccessful.

The second half started strongly for Glens with pressure being put on straight away. Most of the play was within the Glens half but their defence managed to stay strong despite line breaks from Kinsman, Rogers and Christie with their covering defence managing to snuff out the attacks. The game began to break up with the pitch becoming even heavier and the ball becoming dirtier and therefore harder to handle. A missed drop goal from Sterry was the closest that Helensburgh came to scoring.

Allan Glens managed to get one last score in the second half in the corner with a tricky conversion attempt being successful to take the score to 25-0. The GSS Man of the Match was captain Ally Rogers for his solid defence in the centre and breaking the gain line on most of his carries.

Helensburgh Team: Yates, Howell, Bowman, Rogers, Alton, Harris, Sterry; Raeside, Lamb, Flanagan, Greggain, Voigt, Kinsman, Malia, Inglis. Subs Turner, Wright, Christie, Owens.
