HELENSBURGH Rugby Club made it two league wins from two on Saturday with a convincing bonus point win over Cambuslang at Ardencaple on Saturday.

After a period of concerted pressure from the home side, they finally made the breakthrough midway through the first half.

A well constructed back row move from James Musset and flanker Phil Rogers saw Musset offload to captain Ally Rogers who led by example to break through three tackles and dive over the line for the green and golds first try after 26 minutes.

There was no doubt when David Sterry stepped up that he would slot the conversion to add another two points make the score 7-0 to Helensburgh.

After a head knock, Liam Flanagan made way for Jason Feltham. The switch happened with the Burgh support applauding Flanagan’s performance and showing their excitement of having Feltham back with a Burgh badge on his chest. Kick off was collected by Phil Rogers who held off a few defenders and the managed to offload to James Musset to gain more yards and set up for the next phase of play.

This time, a determined Rhodri Davies put in an inch perfect cross-field kick to Johnny Drake who once again gathered perfectly to score in the corner on 31 minutes.

A difficult kick to follow but once again the brilliant boot of David Sterry slotted home to make the score 14-0 to Burgh.

The Cambuslang kick off was chased well and caught, however second row Callum Miller showed his raw strength to rip the ball from Cambuslang clutches and gain possession for Helensburgh. Scrum half Callum Harris took the ball from the maul and played the perfect pass to Rhodri who punted the ball high into the air for David Sterry, he collected perfectly despite competition from opposition, used his silky feet to side-step one defender, fooled another with a dummy pass and ran under the posts to score a try from inside his own half.

Sterry once again finishes his try with the conversion to maintain his 100 per cent kicking record. The score now 21-0 going into half-time.

A clever inside pass from the Cambuslang stand-off to his centre saw them score a try at the start of the second half to make the score 21-5.

From kick off Cambuslang again collect and put pressure on Helensburgh and make it to the Burgh five metre line, looking positive until Rhodri Davies intercepted and ran 95 metres to score a pitch length try, a score on his home debut. Sterry slots to make the score 28-5.

Cambuslang kick off and birthday boy second row Michael Kinsman collects, smashes through tackles and gives a lovely offload to Phil Rogers.

Another perfect opportunity for Burgh’s backs to pass along the line, the ball reaches the powerful centre Scott Simmons who smashes his opposite number, then an opposition back row player, to find himself in space but sees his outside man Johnny Drake unnecessary as he sits down the Cambuslang full-back and bundles over for a try. Sterry slots again with the score now 35-5.

A move involving, Jason Feltham, Andy Inglis, Callum Harris, Scott Simmons and brothers Aaron and David Sterry then set up Ally Rogers for the final try which Sterry converted.

Silvers man of the match went to vice captain James Musset for his superb running and defence.
