HELENSBURGH Rugby Club coach Iain Ross has urged the local community to get out and roar his men to victory in what he insists is the club’s biggest game in years.

The Grizzlies have four games remaining in their West District First Division campaign, all at home, and they sit second from bottom of the table.

With the league still to determine how many teams will go down, Burgh’s fate is all the more uncertain. That will be determined in the coming weeks with the likely outcome being two teams will be relegated, which gives Burgh a great chance to escape as they are level on points with third-bottom Cambuslang.

If three teams face the drop, Burgh could be staring into the abyss with an eight-point gap to safety in that scenario.

However with four home games to come, Ross is confident Burgh can secure their league status and urged people to show their support when Allan Glen’s visit Ardencaple on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

He said: “I think it’s one of the biggest games the club has had in the past two or three years. Last year we weren’t really in this position as we knew quite early in the season that only one team would go down, so we were safe even though we had a poor run at the end of the season and finished second bottom.

“It would be great to get a big home support down to Ardencaple to help the team.

“We’re confident we can stay in this league, I think two wins out of four games should secure that.”

Ross’s confidence is tempered with an admittance that his squad might be rusty after being idle for almost two months while Allan Glen’s have had games on. Burgh also suffered at 27-25 defeat when the sides met in September.

The coach conceded match sharpness will be a concern.

He added: “It’s going to be a hard game because we’ve not played since January 30, we were ahead of other teams for games played so Allan Glen’s have played three games in that time. So match fitness for us could be an issue.

“It’s a bit like going back to square one fitness wise.”
