HELENSBURGH Rugby Club head coach Iain Ross has backed his side to take a huge step towards safety on Saturday by beating Lenzie.

The Grizzlies are on a high after securing an 18-0 win over Allan Glen’s at Ardencaple two weeks ago.

That result puts them four points above the drop zone in the West District Division One with three games to play.

The first of those will see mid-table Lenzie visit Ardencaple on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off. After a bumper crowd roared Burgh to victory last time out, Ross urged locals to get back out and support the team to a crucial win.

He said: “There’s been a good buzz about the place after the win last time out.

“Lenzie will be a difficult game, they beat us quite well away from home. Hopefully we will give them a better game at home but they are a tough team who have quite a good pack.

“We have quite a good set of backs this week so hopefully we will be able to beat them there.

“The fans really turned out and gave a good support for the Allan Glen’s game and it really helped the team, hopefully we can see the same on Saturday.”

The Grizzlies are set to be without captain Ally Rogers and brother Phil on Saturday. However Ross has seen plenty of positives elsewhere in the squad with the emergences of several young players who have come to the fore.

While victory over Lenzie will not secure Burgh’s safety it will leave bottom two sides Garnock and Cambuslang with a mountain to climb.
After a season of selection issues for away games, Ross believes survival would represent a good season in his first at the helm.

He said: “Ally and Phil Rogers can’t play because they are away for the weekend but other than that we should be ok. The young players who have come into the squad are doing well, that has been a big help.

“One win will just about see us safe, Garnock are bottom but they have games in hand so they could still overtake us but it would be a big gap to make up, it is going to be close.

“A win on Saturday and we’ll have one foot there but it is all to play for. I think staying in the league would be a success. this season.

"That would give us a chance to continue to build a team with some of the younger players coming through. I think if we keep the squad we have next season we will be stronger.”
