HELENSBURGH Rugby Club coach Iain Ross wants the chance to lead the Grizzlies next season after Burgh all but guaranteed their league survival.

Back at the end of March things weren’t looking so rosy at Ardencaple. The team were without a game since January and were teetering on the brink of the relegation places.

However two resounding home wins, first over Allan Glen’s and then Saturday’s 52-7 bonus-point win over Lenzie have all but secured Burgh’s status in the West District First Division. Only three wins from their last three games for bottom side Garnock can give them a chance of overtaking the Grizzlies.

Garnock have won just three games so far this season.

Ross got a response from his players just when he needed it most but the team has struggled at times this season with selection difficulties, particularly for away games.

However Ross is keen to be given the chance to continue at the helm and develop some of the club’s younger players.

He said: “It will go to a vote whether I get asked to stay on, it will be up to the club whether that will be the case really.

“But yes I would like to do it again if I get the chance to, there’s been some ups and downs in the season but I’ve enjoyed it.

“I stepped in this season to hold it together and keep it ticking along and help out.

“If we can manage to stay up in the circumstances that will have been a good season. We need to continue to develop the young players at the club, that’s the best way forward for us.”
