Helensburgh Rugby Club ended their season with a 21-13 defeat against West Region District One second-bottom side Garnock.

The Grizzlies were riding the crest of wave after three successive wins but could not give the Ardencaple crowd a win in the final game.

Garnock kept their own slim hopes of survival alive for another week.

They have two games left to play and only two bonus-point wins can save them from relegation.

Should Iain Ross’s Helensburgh survive this season unscathed it will go down as a successful season at Ardencaple, much of which was disrupted by injury and selection issues.

Having won only three games all season Helensburgh turned on the style when it was needed most.

They notched up three wins in their final four games, defeating Oban, Lenzie and Allan Glen’s in a nerve-wracking run in.

That gave Burgh 30 points from their 18 league games this season with their season-ending form the undoubted highlight for the Ardencaple side.

A positive for Helensburgh to take into next season is the bulk of the squad looks set to stay on next year.

Several young players have come to the fore when called upon and Ross will hope for continued improvement from them in the next campaign.

The final day fixtures, next Saturday, sees Oban face Cambuslang and Garnock take on Lenzie after which the relegation places in the league will be decided.
