New Helensburgh Rugby head coach Adam Hart wants to change the culture of the team ahead of their upcoming season in BT West Division 1.

He cited poor training figures throughout the year as one of the biggest gripes so far, and compared to other teams Hart has worked with, it’s a stark contrast.

He said: “I’m trying to change the culture of the senior team, it’s not so much about the playing structure, it’s more about getting people down to training.

“We need to do more as at the moment the training numbers have been quite poor, it’s something we’re trying to increase involvement around the club.

“We have two teams out every Saturday, sometimes it’s single figures for training nights.

“The difference for me was when I was taking Strathclyde Uni we’d have 70 guys on a hockey pitch on Monday night.”

The club finished eighth last year, one point above the relegation zone.

And Hart says the Grizzlies’ first aim for the upcoming season is to secure survival, and then to look from there.

He added: “I’ve told the players our aims already, we have targets percentage wise for each game and I think to just stay up and then start looking up from there.

“Looking at the league last year it was so tight I think between ourselves and Oban who were in fourth there was eight points between us, and we finished eighth, so it shows what a tight league it is.

“But there’s no reason we shouldn’t be looking higher than that as well and to try and build up from there.

The new head coach first began working behind the scenes more in February, to help out old coach Iain Ross.

He said: “I wanted to referee first and foremost, as that’s more of a young person’s thing but I coached Strathclyde Uni for most of last year.

“I finished up there as the season finishes up early so I could help out with the Helensburgh team.

“And at the end of last season we won three of the last four games which meant we survived by a point which was a good end to the season.”
