Helensburgh Rugby Club’s head coach David Calderwood has praised the immediate impact of his newly appointed captain and vice captain.

Newly appointed captain Liam Flanagan, and vice-captain Connor Slader have been influential in helping increase numbers for training during pre-season.

The duo received plaudits from Calderwood for their efforts, as the new season draws nearer.

He said: “Liam’s been really good, he’s been communicating really well with the boys and he’s really good at motivating people.

“Connor’s born and bred in Garelochhead, he’s spent most of his youth career at Helensburgh and joined the marines. He’s based up here and has been playing for us for a couple of seasons now.

“He’s been liasing with the navy guys as well, as he plays with Clyde during the week, so there’s been a good number of them coming down to training as well.

“He’s been good at motivating people and getting people down to training, which is probably why the numbers are up a wee bit as well, so a lot of credit has got to go to those two for that.”

Tight-head prop Flanagan however may miss the start of the season, after picking up a shoulder injury during pre-season.

Calderwood added: “He’s seeing a specialist about it, he’s giving it another couple of weeks. He’s been doing light contact training at the moment but it’ll be another couple of weeks before he’s training properly.

“Hopefully he’ll be fine during the season, he’s been doing a bit of physio on it and exercising it.”

The Grizzlies’ season begins on Saturday when they make the journey up north to compete at the Oban 10s.

Teams from across the country are heading to the Argyle event this weekend, with sides travelling from as far as Inverness and Queensferry to compete in the tournament. And Calderwood is optimistic of his side’s chances.

He said: “We’ve got some good numbers for that and we’re quite optimistic about the team we’ve got out.”

Burgh’s first friendly will be on Saturday, August 12 when they play Clydebank, before travelling down to Cumbernauld on August 19 in the BT West Shield.
