HELENSBURGH and Lomond's young rugby players celebrated in style on Wednesday night after winning the final of the Scottish Schools Under-18 Plate at Murrayfield.

The team, with players from Lomond School, Hermitage Academy and Helensburgh Rugby Club, defeated Marr College 42-29 after a see-saw final at the home of Scottish rugby.

Tries from Angus McLeod and Joe Bull had Lomond & Helensburgh 14-5 ahead at half time, and though Nick Fish's score extended the adfvantage just after half-time, Marr hit back with two tries of their own .

And the Troon team threatened a remarkable comeback when they briefly took the lead 29-28.

But a penalty try and further scores from Angus Guy and Nick Fish saw Lomond & Helensburgh regain and then extend their advantage – and Guy's conversion of all six scores ensured the trophy would head west when the final whistle blew.

The triumph was doubly sweet for the 13 squad members who were part of the Lomond & Helensburgh team which lost in the under-16 final of the same competition just 12 months ago.
