Helensburgh Golf Club members turned out in good numbers for the John McDonald trophy on Saturday, the first of such trophy competitions for this season.

The format was fourball play and the conditions were pleasant, if somewhat cool.

Renewing their partnership for a further season were longstanding friends and former naval comrades Dave Loch and Mick Massey.

Dave, recently returned from his customary hibernation in sunnier climes, was slow to adjust to the lower temperature leaving his colleague to navigate the outward half in three under.

The roles were reversed, however, on the backward nine with Dave being the principal pilot in the team, with score of two over par to produce a winning total of 68.

Hot on their heels were the pairings of Stephen Donald/Sandy Bulloch and Peter Mundie/George Gill with Donald and Bulloch taking runner up spot by virtue of the better last six holes.

Results: 68 - David Loch (17)/Mick Massey (9), 69 - Stephen Donald (12)/Sandy Bulloch (14), Peter Mundie (9)/George Gill (11), 70 - Graham Reid (5)/Gordon Mickel (11), George Mundie (16)/Jimmy Sharkey (14), 70 - Alan Blackstock (14)/Gavin McNaughton (18), 71 - Ronnie McEwan (6)/Ewen Cameron (19), Stuart Leach (11)/Ben Canham (24), John McMillan (11)/Jack Myles (20), Wyllie Robertson (6)/Gordon English (10), Don Griffin (14)/Tim McHughes (20).

Thirty-eight Helensburgh ladies braved the elements to take part in their annual Easter egg greensome.

Former captains Fiona Gilchrist (15) and Jean Ramsay (21) returned a nett 71.6 to take the honours and the eggs, with Babs Robertson (8) and Gail Waddell (22) runners up with a net score of 72.4.

June Haggerty (16) and Claire Harper (15) were third on 76.6.
