Institutions which have been in existence for very many years tend to be slow to embrace change to reflect changing conditions.
Helensburgh Golf Club is no exception but this year in the Club"s 116th year their inventive and enthusiastic Match and Handicap Secretary John Cleland introduced the first midweek monthly medal exclusively for Seniors in recognition of the very active and valuable role which they play in the life of the club.
An encouraging entry of 53 mature members assured the success of the venture and the combination of benign conditions with experience and no little skill produced a competition standard scratch score of 69.
Taking the honours in this inaugural event with a net 66 was 28 handicapper Andy Stewart whose equal halves of 47 strokes was a mark of his consistency.
Runner up one stroke behind came Mel Newton. The effervescent Jack Myles was third.. LEADING SCORES: 66: Andy Stewart (28): 67: Mel Newton (18): 68: Jack Myles (20): 69: Roger Waigh (16): 70: Crawford Howat (12): Iain Fernie (23): 71: Kenny Hale (12): Stuart Graham (25): Bill McKiernan (23): Stewart Harper (10): Graham Crowhurst (16): Ken Dobson (15).
Eighty eight members took part in the Annual Greensomes Stableford for the Spring Cleaning Trophy. Lou Carrier and Andy Bennett were clear winners. Their 38 points took them one point ahead of three dangerous duos ready to pounce in the event of a slip up but Lou and Andy recovered from the failure to abstract any points from the 15th to finish strongly and take the title. A better inward half by Mel Newton and Jim McRae gave them the runners up spot. LEADING SCORES: 38 PTS: Andy Bennett (13)/Lou Carrier (22): 37PTS: Mel Newton (18)/Jim McRae (24): Dave Lutwyche (22)/A Armstrong (20): Brian Bruce (25)/Norman Rodger (17): 36PTS: Mike Tait (11)/Alan Rankin (13).
Twenty eight Helensburgh Ladies enjoyed sunny but somewhat cool conditions for their March Medal. Carolyn Stait continued her progress to a lower handicap when she took the honours in the silver division with a net 73, two under the scratch score of the day. But for trouble at the 15th where she recorded a treble bogey the reduction in her handicap could well have been greater. In the Bronze Division June Aranci returned the best net score of 80. LEADING SCORES: Silver: 73: Carolyn Stait (19): 76: Gemma Canham (16): 80: Linda Moffat (13): Bronze: 80: June Aranci (26): 81: Anne Riding (28): 82: Elizabeth Cordner (36): Jean Ramsay (21).
