LAST weekend saw the highly successful annual mini rugby festival at Ardencaple.

Helensburgh youth rugby hosted 400 boys from nine different clubs from P3 to P7.

With perfect playing conditions the boys enjoyed good open running rugby.

Helensburgh P3 Comets and Helensburgh P6s won their respective age groups trophies.

The P3 section is running a strong group of boys and was able to field two teams - the Comets and the Bears.

The sides met in the final after both beating Cartha Queens Park and Clydebank/Loch Lomond. The P6s beat Clydebank/Loch Lomond 11-0 and the touring team Sevenoaks Stags from Kent 4-2.

In the other group, Sevenoaks' other team, the Elms, were expected finalists but just lost out to a strong Birkmyre team.

Although the visitors did beat Uddingston and Dalziel convincingly.

This set up a final between Helensburgh and Birkmyre.

Whilst both defences were on top Helensburgh's superior passing out wide from Caskie meant the pace men Harkins and Rosie were brought into the game.

With Thomas, Hamilton, Thompson and Smith pushing up hard in defence Birkmyre couldn't create anything.

Eventually Thomas breached the Birkmyre defence with a try and soon after a blistering outside run from Rosie resulted in a second try for the Burgh 6s.

Keeping the defensive line speed fast shut out Birkmyre except for one score.

The final score was 2-1 to Helensburgh.

The P3s have now won three trophies this season and the P6s have two with one still to play on June 20.

And this week we can also bring you more pictures from the Helensburgh 7s tournament which was also played last weekend.
