The 23-year-old had tried and failed for 13 years to put the Glasgow side to the sword whilst the Ardencaple faithful have not witnessed a win over their rivals since 2009.

However, all that changed with an 18-7 drubbing over the visitors at Ardencaple and Dunlop believes he knew his side were going to win even before kick off.

Dunlop said: “I have played against GHK teams since primary six, all the way up through high school and into the current side but I had never managed to pick up a win.

“So to go out there and put on the performance that we did was fantastic and it is great to eventually beat them, all the more so after the number of defeats we have been handed out by GHK.

“But, it was one of those days where everything just felt right.

“We were a bit slack in the morning and captain Sean McNee had a word with us, telling us we were a bit off and we had to get our heads screwed on so that gave us a bit of a kick.

“After that you could just feel it and it seemed like everything was going to go right.

“Straight from kick-off we were 3-0 up and that gave us the perfect start.” Dunlop capped off Saturday’s win with a man-of-the-match performance and was delighted to pick up the award amidst the celebrations in the crowd and around Ardencaple.

He added: “The scenes were unbelievable, as soon as the final whistle went the reaction was fantastic.

“The amount of people staying around after the match showed just how big a win it is for everyone connected with the club.

“The crowd got behind us throughout and in the final 10 minutes they were shouting for everything which must have made it hard for the GHK boys.

“Personally, to be awarded man of the match was brilliant.

“Last week was probably the worst I had played all season so I had a quiet word with myself and it has clearly paid off.” Helensburgh welcome Irvine RFC to Ardencaple on Saturday for their final league game of the season with kick-off at 3pm.
