HELENSBURGH flanker Johnny Clipston is striving to put the disappointment of last season to one side as the side embark on a new journey under John Cashmore.

After the personal woes of injury last term, Clipston is ready to make a return following a good pre-season. With Helensburgh also falling to defeat in their final game of last season, only their second home loss that term, the team are raring to get back to winning ways.

Clipston echoed head coach John Cashmore’s words that a strong start is key, telling Advertiser Sport: “If you can win the first few games, then it is a good marker to put down.

“It allows you to build up a good winning momentum and positive winning mentality.

“We haven’t spoken yet about setting any official targets for the season but we want to try and finish in the top half of the league.” Clipston said that it had been a tough pre season schedule for the club, but stated his satisfaction regarding his increased involvement in training: “It’s my fourth season with Helensburgh and you find that the senior players tend to take on more of a leadership role in helping the rest of the team out.

“I’m also a fitness instructor so I’ve been leading fitness sessions with the players and I’ve really enjoyed stepping up and being able to do that job with Helensburgh.” With a change of management this summer and the new regime underway, Clipston had only good things to say following the transition.

He added: “There have been a lot of positives in pre-season.

“The players are getting fitter and we’re getting used to playing with each other.

“There is still a lot to work on but at the start of the season, that is always to be expected.” The additions of new players to the side should also provide a welcome boost for the club, with Stuart Ross returning after six years as Hillhead captain, whilst new Spanish signing Alberto Figueroa is now eligible to play.

Clipston said: “There is an excitement about having Stuart back, he’s looking fit and sharp and I’m really looking forward to working with him.” Helensburgh kick off their season against Garnock at home this weekend.
