With the sun splitting the sky, Saturday’s game was another example what summer rugby could be like if the SRU could be tempted to a schedule switch.

As has so often been the case this season, Burgh coach John Cashmore was forced to name a makeshift team such was the lack of bodies. The extent of the numbers crisis was proven by the fact that Cashmore was himself listed as a substitute despite being three times the age of some of his players.

The team started with young Michael Kinsman filling in at centre, with Cashmore stripped and ready to go on the touchline.

Helensburgh actually started the stronger of the two sides with Howell making a great break, only to be brought down by the Lenzie full back. Stevenson, out of position at scrum-half, also looked sharp and made a good break from the base of the scrum but he also couldn’t make the breakthrough following a forward pass to Mussett.

Lenzie started to string some passes together and some fine interplay led to a score under the posts.

This score didn’t deter the Grizzlies and they continued to pile the pressure on the Lenzie backline. The hosts conceded a number of penalties which were all missed due to the gusty wind that was making life difficult for the kickers in the team.

As the game wore on Lenzie started to go more into the game. During one promising attack Burgh’s Howell rushed looking for an interception, however he missed and the Lenzie fullback ran the length of the park only to be tackled by Ram just short of the line. The ball was quickly recycled by the attack, allowing the Lenzie centre to score.

Burgh continued to play well as Lenzie looked tired. A good Ram kick to the corner set up a lineout close to the Lenzie line. From the driving maul the ball was spun right where winger Alton touched down; 14-5. As the half drew to a close Lenzie attacked again hacking the ball through. Burgh failed to clear their lines and conceded another try making the score at the break 19-5.

Lenzie came out in the second half all guns blazing, their first attack only halted by a strong tackle from Alton. Recycling the ball, the home team forced themselves through for their third try; 26-5.

From the next Lenzie attack Burgh were penalised and Dominick yellow carded for not retreating quick enough.

From a good position and with an extra man Lenzie scored the bonus try taking the score to 31-5. Burgh soon found themselves down to 13 men as Inglis was yellow carded for preventing the ball from being released. From the penalty Lenzie scored a push over try. Easily converted, the score stretched to 38-5. Coach Cashmore, now on the park to shore up the scrum, must have been proud of his team as despite another score the team refused to give up. Howell put too much on a through kick which was easily covered by the full back.

Burgh kept up the pressure and from short in front of the posts Flanagan scored one of his trademark tries. Converted by Ram; 43-12.

Lenzie were to have the last laugh as they rounded off the day with another score making the result 48-12.

GSS man of the match, just pipping John Cashmore was Andy Ram for his all round game and covering tackles.
