HELENSBURGH Rugby Club captain Ally Rogers has urged caution despite his delight at the Grizzlies near perfect start to the league campaign.

The Ardencaple side won away at Garnock in the first league game of the season, their first victory on the road since last season’s opener. They followed that victory with a comprehensive 42-5 bonus point win over Cambuslang at home on Saturday.

After a raft of changes on and off the pitch in the summer, things are looking up for Burgh. Rogers, who was named as club captain during the close season, praised new head coach Iain Ross and the squad for the start — but warned Burgh not to take their eyes off the ball.

Rogers said: “We’ve got a good atmosphere on and off the park with the changes at the club. My message to the guys has been this is just the foundations being put down and we take each game as it comes.

“The league has started really well getting nine points out of 10. However we won our first two games last season as well so we have to be cautious.

“The players are working well with Iain Ross. James Mussett and Johnny Drake (vice captains) have both had a change in their career which will allow them to play more away games, and our new stand off has made a difference.” With progress being made in the early stages of this season, hopes are high for an improvement on last year’s league placing of second bottom in the West District First Division. Rogers insists the side let themselves down in last season’s run in with a series of defeats, but is confident of a top half finish this term.

The new skipper also hopes for a continuation of Burgh’s good form in this Saturday’s trip to Allan Glens.

He said: “There is still more to come from us. The standard we set on Saturday against Cumbernauld is what we need to be aiming for each week, six tries all converted, that shows what we are capable in terms of fast, explosive rugby and we were solid at the back too.

“Allan Glens will have seen our results and they will look to stop us playing.

“They are a stodgy team and it is a difficult place to go, but if we set up properly I’m confident we can cause an upset.

“The goal for me this season is the top half. We let ourselves down last year during the run in but there is no reason we shouldn’t be going for a top five finish this season.”
