Racing for the prestigious Clyde Cup, the event took place in generally light breezes (6 to 11 knots) from the east and the south, allowing race officer Howard Morrison to set a series of challenging windward/leeward courses across conflicting sea and shore breezes, first on the Kilcreggan shore and later in the week under the hilly shores of Loch Long.

The third day was given to a distance race, begun in a thunderstorm with visibility down to 200 yards and ending in sparkling sunlight, and sailed over some 14 miles twice round a course from mid Firth via Kilcreggan Point to Ironotter off Greenock and back to the mid-channel mouth of Loch Long.

At the end of an enjoyable week's competition, the Clyde Cup was won convincingly by Cove Sailing Club's Mark Bradshaw (for the sixth time) with his club mate Robin Jarvis in Pamina (74) with eight points, with fellow Cove sailors, Alan MacLeod and Erin Maconnachie in clear second place in Pied Piper (20) with 12 points.

The next positions were closely fought with Aldeburgh's Hussar (110) - Rebecca Johnson, Bruce Johnson and Nigel Waller - finishing third with 20 points.

Then came Electra (109) - Alan DeVenny and cadet Callum Foulis in fourth place with 22 points, followed by Duncan Farquhar, Alan Glendinning et al in Sula (84) with 23 points and CSC Commodore Eric Robertson with cadets Jack Robertson and Zoe Robinson in Bora (88) in sixth position with 27 points.

The close competition among Cove boats on the leaderboard and in mid-fleet reflected well the equal claims on trophies in club racing so far this season, and without doubt the visiting Alde fleet upped its game this year with an outstanding all round performance from Hussar (110), supported by steady single figure results from outgoing Association commodore Jonathan Evans crewed by Micky Steen in Tantrum (139).
