Shandon sailor Anna Burnet says she has the Tokyo 2020 Olympics firmly in her sights after recent medal success.

The former Lomond School pupil has been sailing competitively at a high level since the age of 11 and is now fully focused on reaching the biggest stage in sailing.

The 24-year-old made the switch from 49erFX crew 18 months ago to join John Grimson’s Nacra crew.

The pair haven’t looked back since, and have shot up the Nacra 17 world rankings since after winning a bronze medal in their first event together at the World Cup in Melbourne last year and claiming a silver at the World Cup in Santander in June.

After recent results, Burnet is convinced Tokyo will arrive at the right time in her sailing career.

She said: “Tokyo is definitely the main focus. I think we’re in pretty good shape to get there.

"At the moment there is three British teams in the top 10 in the world and only one will get selected for the Olympics, so we have to beat some really good teams to get there and we’re all fairly close at the moment.

“For me I think Tokyo comes at the right time in my development, I should have enough experience by then to be in a good position.

“If I had been able to get myself in a position to go to Rio it might have been a bit early for me but I think Tokyo will come at a good time.”

Burnet and Gimson have been training with foiling boats in preparation for foiling the Nacra competitively.

A sailing hydrofoil is a boat with wing-like foils mounted under the hull which lift the boat out of the water to reduce drag and increase speed.

It is at the forefront of technology in the sport and Burnet is excited at the prospect of having the chance to be one of the first to compete using it in the Olympics.

But before that her focus is reaching the podium again at the European Championships in August and the World Championships in September.

She said: “Foiling is very exciting because it is the cutting edge of where the sport is going.

“It is at the forefront of the sport and hopefully it will make it one of the most exciting sports to watch at the next Olympics.

“It would be amazing to be one of the first Olympic sailors to compete using foiling.”
