LOMOND pupil Lorenzo Chiavarini has had a lot to celebrate in the sailing world recently.

The 2008 Helensburgh Advertiser for Sports Person of Year qualified for GBR in both the World Men’s Laser Radial Championships staged at Largs in July, the only Scot of the GBR team, and also qualified for the World Youth Championships also at Largs. It was his first experience in a mens event, as only 16.

He was sixth under-19 in the World and second under-19 in the European division.

After a break of three days Lorenzo returned to Largs and sailed in the World Youth Radial Championships, he received trophies for arriving fifth in the under-17s in the European Championship and seventh under-17 in the World Championship.

Overall he was ranked 23rd in the World in both events. The event will be hosted next year at La Rochelle but in the meantime he has a full calendar of training and events during the winter.
