Helensburgh Sailing Club played host to one of Scotland's top sailing youth events, as youngsters took part in the club's annual youth regatta. The popular challenge attracted 80 racing dinghies and their crews to the Burgh waters where three courses were laid out in the waters between Craigendoran and Kidston Park to accommodate the various classes of boats, while an army of helpers shore-side provided safety cover and food in the galley.

With three races planned each day, the crews endured the full range of weather conditions, to test their skills to the limits and these skills were displayed by sailors from a number of different clubs with Bradowie Loch, Dalgety Bay, Loch Earn, Loch Venacher, Largs and Largo Bay all registering wins as well as a number of the Helensburgh crews.

Saturday dawned overcast and blustery, and, with the race officers watching the wind gauges, the first races kicked off shortly after midday.

The wind rose during the afternoon to over 25 knots during race two, producing choppy seas which were a challenge for many of the sailors.

Most of the 29er class boats spent more time upside down with their crews swimming in the Clyde than the right way up.

Miraculously though, by the end of the third race, the wind had dropped away and the tail-end boats were becalmed on their way back to the clubhouse.

Weather forecasts were predicting light winds for Sunday, and so it proved to be.

The gentle breeze died during the first race leaving most of the boats stranded out on the course and exceeding the time limit for finishing. A few of the smarter crews read the tide correctly and managed to finish.

After an hour sitting in the sun on a glassy sea waiting to see if the wind would return, the race officers were about to abandon for the day, when a full sail was spied far down the Clyde off Gourock, and gradually a fine breeze arrived from the southwest, allowing the final race to be completed.

Helensburgh sailors fared well at the prize giving, with brothers Jack and Finn Aitken winning the Laser Radial and Topper 4.2 classes, Calum Rosie winning the Topper full rig, and Grace Laverty and Wallace Jamieson winning the handicap class. James Forsyth managed second in the Topper 4.2, and Calum Bell third in Topper Development class, Joanna Barrie and Andrew Mitchell were second, and Jenny and David Abraham third in the 420 class.
