HELENSBURGH Sailing Club will take part in a Guiness World Record attempt on Sunday, September 21. The aim is to hold the largest ever sailing race, run at multiple venues world-wide on the same day. To qualify for inclusion in the record each venue must have 25 entries.

The idea for the attempt was inspired by the tragic death of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, multiple Olympic sailing medallist, during a training accident in San Fransisco Bay on May 9, 2013, while preparing for the America’s Cup competition.

A charity in memory of Andrew, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, was set up by Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy OBE and Andrew’s wife Leah. The goals are to inspire the next generation through the use of sailing and to help young people develop the personal skills to succeed in life, and improve access to jobs and careers within the maritime sector.

Barts Bash is being run by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. The aim is to hold a massive sailing event which is fun and inspiring across the world and to promote awareness and raise funds for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.

Any type of sailing boat can take part in the record-breaking attempt, including both dinghies and keelboats. Helensburgh Sailing Club members, and non-members with boats, are welcome to come along and join in what should be a fun day. Sign up for the race at www.bartsbash.co.uk/club/helensburgh-sailing-club.
