When you walk into a store, you may not realise that there's literally something in the air that's already trying to convince you to buy. Everyone loves a bargain and there’s no better time of the year to get that adrenaline rush by visiting the ‘Sales’.

Come Winter or Summer sale time, Retailers manage to create within the industry and their customer base huge excitement about unwanted and unsold stock. From ‘special buys’ bought in bulk and discounted for the customer, to warehouse clearance sales, it’s heaven for the avid shopper.

Retailers are thinking more and more of how to make our shopping experience, especially at sale time, a memorable one.

On average we have 22 items in our wardrobes that have never been worn. Why then do we still succumb to sale buying?

Slanting mirrors, clearance signs and store design all help to persuade us to buy. However, the one thing that Retailers are investing in is the smell of the store. When you walk in to many shops nowadays you may not immediately realise that there’s a smell in the air. Some fashion retailers, furniture stores and car dealers now realise that introducing ‘scent marketing’ can influence their customers to purchase. A smell goes directly to the emotional part of the brain as the likes of Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, Victoria’s Secret, ToysrUs and many more cash-in on. Hollister not only use their own scent within their stores, they actively sell ‘Fierce’. So the next time out shopping and you’re memory takes you back to the days of playing in the grass during the long hot days of summer, remember that ‘Scent Marketing’ is at work!

Hint/Tips :- Customers spend 40% more time in a scented area of a retail store over an odour free area.
