WAITROSE'S plans to open a multi-million pound store in Helensburgh has been a hot topic in the town this week - prompting a wide range of reactions from residents and businesses.
Last week, the Advertiser revealed the up-market chain's plans to build a 25,000 sq ft store and filling station opposite the Hermitage Academy, creating 180 jobs.
A number of people have welcomed the proposal with open arms, saying it would be a much-needed boost to the town and that any development of its kind should be embraced.
A lot of comments were left on the Advertiser's Facebook page.
For example, Gill Fish commented: "A great new supermarket, a potential cinema development [a reference to the Helensburgh Heroes plan] and a great new Wetherspoons pub. Fantastic news for Helensburgh, which will benefit all in the town." However, another view claims that Waitrose is too up-market and that the town needs a more affordable chain.
Martin Cornish wrote: "Waitrose will only suit folk with money. It's owned by John Lewis and we all know how expensive that chain is. It's an affordable supermarket that's needed in town. It won't stop people going to ASDA and Morrisons in Dumbarton." * See this week's Advertiser for all the reaction
