The Burgh supermarket won the award for best Retail Building at a ceremony held at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu hotel on Thursday, June 5.

The annual event organised by The Drum, celebrated the Scotland’s top talent across both the design and architecture industries.

Waitrose Helensburgh is also one of the shortlisted projects in the prestigious Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) 2014 Awards, due to be announced on June 18.

The supermarket’s Helensburgh branch, which opened last October, sits in a gateway location at the entrance to the town, opposite a secondary school.

Simon Walsh, associate at Cooper Cromar, the architects behind the Waitrose Helensburgh build, attended the awards.

He told the Advertiser: “We are all very pleased, as are our clients Waitrose and Drum Developments.

“We were quietly confident and quiet hopeful that we would win after the judges visited the store.

“We were up against tough competition from the SSE Hydro and its famous designers Sir Norman Foster so for a supermarket to be up against this sort of competition and win is just great.

“The supermarket building has been very well received and we are pleased with this.” And Martin Gorman, development manager for Waitrose added: “As our 300th branch in the UK, we wanted a landmark design for Waitrose Helensburgh and our architects, Cooper Cromar, certainly delivered that.

“We’re all immensely proud of winning this award and the Helensburgh branch design has set a gold standard for our new developments. It’s regarded within our business as being one of our best stores.

“It is a unique and contemporary design in keeping with the town’s identity and character. Inside it offers a warm, welcoming environment, which I am sure our customers appreciate.”
