Luke and sailing partner Elliot Willis clinched a gold medal with a day to spare as the British Sailing Team pairing stormed to victory at the 470 European Championships in Greece on Monday.

The 27-year-old Rhu sailor is now casting his mind further adrift and admits that competing at the European Olympics, if Glasgow’s proposed bid for the games is successful, would be ‘awesome’.

It was revealed yesterday that Glasgow could be in contention to host the European Olympics as early as 2019, however sailing is not among the events on the list when Baku in Azerbaijan hosts the inaugural games next year.

Luke told the Advertiser: “It sounds awesome and I hope if it was to be a success that they would have sailing in the Games so I can compete and be a part of it.

“With the Commonwealth Games taking place this summer as well which is going to be massive, to bring another major sporting event to the city of Glasgow would be incredible.” Luke and team mate Elliot Willis amassed an unassailable 22-point lead over their nearest rivals at this week’s European Championships in Athens before heading into the final medal race on Tuesday.

The pair aren’t about to sit back and get caught up in the doldrums though.

Luke added: “I’m flying back home to have five days off and a breather as not long after we fly out to Rio for the Olympic Test Event. So really, there is no rest for the wicked – we are straight back into training and another regatta on the other side of the world.” Patience, who won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in London, is delighted at the latest success given that it comes only five months after teaming up with double world champion Willis.

He added: “We’ve come here and executed everything we meant to and had an amazing regatta. Nothing will ever compare to winning a silver medal at a home Olympic Games and nothing ever will compare at any point until I have won a gold medal at the next Olympics. It’s great to win here this week though, there is a lot of pride in what we have done in such a short time in the boat together. To be sat here European champion is a pretty good feeling.” Since teaming up in late February the pair have enjoyed podium positions on the EUROSAF circuit but the European victory is their first major regatta medal.
