It is expected that around 15 dogs and their owners will leave from the Sea Life Centre at Loch Lomond Shores at around noon and embark on the walk before finishing at the Dug Cafe and Canine Boutique.

Alison Waters, organiser, said: “Bernese dogs are quite a rare breed and the Scottish walkers taking part will be quite spread out.

“There’s people coming from Edinburgh, Kircaldy, Alloa, and Ayrshire. It will be nice to get a Scottish presence but really it’s just for fun.” The Bernese Mountain Dog Walk was the brainchild of a group in America called Bernese Friends Worldwide and around five walks have taken place in the UK, however the planned event is thought to be will be a Scottish first.

Alison will be taking part with her dog Ailsa, aged three, and originally comes from the north-east of England where she took part in a walk last year.

She said the idea to organise a walk in Scotland was prompted by her friendship with Cardross dog breeder Pat Paterson, who bred Ailsa.

Alison travelled to Scotland with Ailsa about a year ago so she could meet her family and the idea for a Scottish walk started from there.

She said: “My dog Ailsa’s breeder is Pat so it started off that we were just going to bring Ailsa up to Scotland and I said we could go along to the Dug cafe so it just started off like that.

“Then I thought we were coming up in the Spring for April 18 so I said, why don’t we make it a bit more of an event?” Pat, who works as a dispenser at Cardross Pharmacy, will also be taking part in the walk with her dogs Meg, Bailey, and Oscar.

She said: “We have bred a few Bernese mountain dogs and we have had dogs for about seven or eight years.

“They make wonderful pets because of their temperament, they’re quite placid.

“There’s lots of us all over the place taking part in the walk and it’s just a way of us getting together.”
