THE Royal Navy’s top training organisation in the north has a new head with the appointment of Captain Andy Bower as Captain Training North.

Captain Bower takes over from Captain Bob Anstey who has been in charge of the Flag Officer Sea Training (North) organisation for the past two years.

On Monday, May 23, the pair officially handed-over with Captain Anstey leaving to take up post as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff Operations at Northwood.

"Having two years in command of FOST (North) has been a huge privilege," said Captain Anstey.

"There can be few positions that give such job satisfaction and the opportunity to see such high quality training being delivered on a daily basis.

"My task, and that of my team, has been made much easier by the great support we have enjoyed from across the Naval Base.

"I will be sad to leave the Clyde, but happy to leave FOST (N) in such capable hands."

Captain Bower is no stranger to FOST, having previously been a Command Sea Rider, Commanding Officer – or “teacher” as they’re known – of the Submarine Command Course, and most recently the Commander Sea Training.

Back in 2007 he was in command of HMS Vengeance for three successive years, culminating in the award of an OBE.

He has also served with submarines HMS Talent, HMS Spartan, HMS Sovereign, HMS Superb and HMS Vanguard.

Past jobs also include a period with the Faslane Flotilla with the Force Generation Team and as a member of Naval Staff in MOD Main Building.

His new position as Captain Training North includes responsibility for all RN Submarine, Mine Warfare Vessel and Patrol Craft training and assessment, both at sea and ashore.

Captain Bower said: "Having lived and served in Scotland for many years I am looking forward to maintaining and renewing acquaintances across the Naval Base while meeting the challenges of my new role.

"I would like to pay to tribute to my predecessor and hope that I can respond to the challenges of the role with the same equanimity and good humour he has displayed throughout his two years in post."
