MEMBERS of the trade union at the centre of a major dispute over workers rights have voted “overwhelmingly” to end the dispute.

Unite union members from Faslane and Coulport made the decision to end the nuclear base dispute on Tuesday at a mass meeting of members.

They voted to accept a new accord designed to repair industrial relations at the bases. It was negotiated on April 10 by Unite general secretary Len McCluskey, Unite officers and representatives, and senior officers of employer Babcock Marine.

Unite regional officer Stephen Deans said: “Unite is always guided by our members and they always had the final say on this accord. We’re pleased that they have given it such overwhelming support, and we hope it creates a new, lasting working relationship at Coulport and Faslane, based on genuine respect for Unite members and their representatives.”

Civilian staff at Coulport and Faslane started industrial action on Friday, March 24, after allegations that Babcock Marine were undermining workers rights as part of a campaign to outsource work.

The new proposed accord acknowledges that there has been a “break-down in the relationship” between management and trade unions and outlined a series of proposals to resolve the problems.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: “Unite pays tribute to the members, representatives and stewards who stood strong and united throughout this dispute. Their steady determination, calmness, and commitment to protect their rights are an example for workers everywhere.”

MSP Jackie Baillie is delighted to see that both parties managed to come to an agreement and that there is an end to the dispute.

She said: “I have been speaking regularly to local shop stewards at Faslane and Coulport and Babcock management over the past few weeks and I am delighted that an agreement has been reached to settle the dispute.

“I urge both sides to keep the dialogue open to ensure good working relations for all staff at the base.”
