A FAMILIAR face from television returned home for Cardross Primary School’s Wild West-themed gala day.

Hazel Irvine, whose parents still live locally, opened the event and then stayed for the afternoon activities.

The bad weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those who attended and all planned activities went ahead, both inside and outside.

The gala was organised by the parent council (CPSA) under the leadership of chair Kirsty Caldow.

The planned activities included mainstage demonstrations from local dance schools and line dancers, a Glasgow Gunslingers demonstration, various stalls for people to browse and local community group information stands.

There was plenty to keep all ages entertained including inflatables, sumo suits, archery, beat the goalie, tombola and the very popular soak a teacher.

Also proving popular was the dog show and fancy dress parade which gave everyone the chance to show off their best wild west outfits.

The school was very busy on the day with a huge turnout consisting of visitors from the local community, pupils and their families, past and present and friends and relations.

Head teacher, Elspeth Davis, said: “We were delighted that former pupil, Hazel Irvine, the well known BBC sports presenter joined us to open the event and stayed for the afternoon to join in with the fun.

“Everyone had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It’s become an event that everyone really looks forward to; there’s always something for everyone and the huge amount of work and effort that goes into making it so well organised and such a success is really valued by all of us at the school.

“We want to thank everyone for their support and enjoyment of the day and look forward to the next one in 2019!”
