MORE than 100 people walked in Helensburgh on Sunday to raise money to support the families of the Nancy Glen fishing boat tragedy.

Helensburgh Football Club organised the two mile fund-raising walk in a show of solidarity with the Tarbert community, with whom it has forged strong links and footballing friendships over the years.

The Nancy Glen capsized in Loch Fyne on January 18 with crewmen Duncan MacDougall and Przemek Swarcyzk on board.

A third man, John Miller, raised the alarm when he was pulled from the water by the crew of a passing boat.

Friends and family of the men who died are trying to raise the money required to raise the sunken boat and to enable them to lay their loved ones to rest.

Determined to show their support, around 100 Burgh residents – and their pets – turned out on Sunday to show their support and raise as much money as they could.

And now the organisers are hopeful that their efforts will see more than £1,000 raised with donations still to arrive.

Donations collected in buckets on the day topped £600 and a JustGiving page set up by the club has donations of £115.

Helensburgh FC coach Gordon Brodie, who helped organise the event, said: “What an amazing turnout! Thanks to all the boys, girls, ladies, gentlemen and doggies who gave up their time for our fundraising walk in aid of our friends in Tarbert.”

The walk started and ended at the Commodore Inn and Robert Paterson, who owns the venue provided tea and coffee for all those who took part.

Gordon added: “We need to say a huge thanks also to the management and staff at the Commodore for being our hosts before and after the walk including very generously laying on free teas, coffees, hot chocolate and juices. Thanks also to The Journey gym who really got behind the event and encouraged a good number of their members to join us.”

Gordon added: “Whatever the final figure is, it will boost the fund to help raise the Nancy Glen and bring two of Tarbert’s finest home. And just as important was to send a message that our community is thinking of theirs. Thanks again to everyone.”
