Moves are under way to launch a Police Scotland Youth Volunteer group in Helensburgh.

It is hoped the group, which will encourage a spirit of adventure and good citizenship amongst young people, will be up and running by the summer.

As a first step, the police are keen to enrol adult volunteers with a passion for youth work who will play a key role in the group set-up.

Constable Craig Stamp, a youth engagement officer and PSYV Group Co-ordinator Helensburgh told the Advertiser: "The soon to be formed Helensburgh PSYV will, following an initially period of training, meet fortnightly at Hermitage Academy on a Wednesday evening - times to be confirmed.

"Following the initial training, they will then have the opportunity to volunteer at both local and national events which have previously included the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Commonwealth Games to name a couple.

"However, first we are keen to enrol adult volunteers who will lead and assist the young people."

The PSYV are now a well established youth organisation in Scotland, with currently 32 groups across the force area.

They are made up of 24 young people aged 13 to 18.

The overall aims of PSYV are to promote practical understanding of policing amongst all young people; encourage a spirit of adventure and good citizenship amongst young people; support local policing priorities through volunteering and giving young people a chance to be heard,

and inspire young people to participate positively in their communities.
