TRAFFIC through central Helensburgh is expected to increase significantly over the next few days due to the closure of the main road between Loch Lomond and Garelochhead.

The A817, also known as the Haul Road, will be shut between 8.30am and 4pm from Sunday, May 13 to Thursday, May 17.

The A817 is the most direct route for vehicle traffic heading between central Scotland and HM Naval Base Clyde at both Faslane and Coulport, as well as the Rosneath peninsula.

The signed diversionary route take drivers off the A82 at Arden, on the A818 to the centre of Helensburgh, along West Montrose Street and Rhu Road Higher, and then along the A814 coast road via Rhu.

In a notice announcing the ‘temporary prohibition of traffic’ on the A817, Argyll and Bute Council states that use of the road “will be prohibited to all vehicles…to allow works to be carried out”.

Exceptions will apply only to the emergency services, to vehicles involved in the works, and for local access when permitted.
