An 80-year-old grandmother has cycled an incredible 134 miles to fundraise for Mary’s Meals.

Ellison Hudson started her coast-to-coast challenge in Helensburgh, at the start of the John Muir Way on Friday, May 18 and finished in Dunbar on Tuesday, May 23.

The keen cyclist set herself the mammoth challenge to mark her milestone birthday in April.

Ellison told the Advertiser: “I have to admit, it was really hard work. There was a younger friend doing it with me and my granddaughter took part and they faired much better than me.

“But I didn’t want to give up and tell people I couldn’t manage it.

“I was really happy to do it and was glad I was able to complete it”, she added.

“Mary’s Meals is a great charity so I wanted to support the work they do.”

Mary’s Meals provides school meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest countries, encouraging them to the go to school where they can get an education.

Ellison explained: “I love the simple idea behind Mary’s Meals – giving children a good meal at school. I was moved by the story behind the charity and was amazed to hear that 93p from every pound donated is spent on its charitable activity.

“Having previously lived in India, I've seen first-hand the poverty that exists and I think it’s wonderful what Mary’s Meals is doing around the world."

Ellison completed the challenge with her friend Lin Brisley.

Lin said: “We raised over £1,000, so we are happy about that.

“We didn’t ask people for any money we just told people we were doing it, so we were very lucky that people were so generous.”
