DETAILS of a series of free summer workshops for young people at the Cove Park artists’ retreat on the Rosneath peninsula have been unveiled this week.

The ‘Hands-On Cove Park’ workshops cover a range of topics for a variety of age groups from art and design, photography, filmmaking, printmaking and music.

Full day and half-day workshops are available, as well as events where the whole family can join in.

The programme runs from the last week of July until the second week of August.

The workshops are as follows:

Saturday, July 28 (10am-12.30pm): A drawing workshop for P3-P7 children where rubbings, impressions, observational and imaginative drawings are combined.

Saturday, July 28 (1.30-4pm): A similar workshop, this time for secondary school age children, creating fantastical drawings by combining rubbings and impressions with observational and imaginative illustrations.

Tuesday, July 31 (10am-4pm): ‘Music Making Landscapes’ for secondary school children, with a focus on collaboratively composing a piece of music and then creating an artwork in response to the composition.

Tuesday, July 31 (10am-12.30pm): ‘Sculptural seeds’ for children with an adult, exploring the wonderful world of seeds with artist Jennifer Beattie, and creating ‘sculptural seed bombs’ by blending art and nature.

Wednesday, August 1 (10am-4pm): ‘Music Making Landscapes’ for children from P3-P7, in a similar way to the event for older children described above.

Thursday, August 2 (10am-12.30pm): A chance for children with an adult to create their own piece of tessellating wooden jewellery or a wall hanging.

Friday, August 3 (10am-12.30pm): Children from P3-P7 can design and print their own canvas bag using hand-made stamps, stencils and illustrations to create a unique tote bag to take home.

Friday, August 3 (1.30-4pm): A similar canvas bag designing workshop, this time for children of secondary school age.

Monday, August 6 (10am-1pm): ‘Screen Play’, for children with an adult, exploring print, pattern and screen printing techniques.

Tuesday, August 7 (10am-4pm): Secondary school age children can learn about the origins of photography through making different kinds of camera obscuras such as ‘telescope’ and ‘shoebox’ obscuras.

Wednesday, August 8 (1.30-4pm): A workshop for children with adults, using the ‘cyanotype’ printing process to document the flowers, plants and animals to be found in and around Cove Park.

Thursday, August 9 (10am-4pm): P3-P7 children can learn about the origins of photography by in a fun workshop making and using simple camera obscuras.

Thursday, August 9 (10am-4pm): Secondary school pupils can learn how to find unusual perspectives on familiar objects by filming them in different ways and learning about various moving-image techniques.

Monday, August 13 (10am-12.30pm): A chance for children with an adult to explore the craft of book-binding by creating a beautiful hand-made book, just in time to head back to school. Using a variety of materials and techniques, this workshop will give an insight into the huge potential for making your own experimental books.
