Today's Archive Hour winds the clock back to July 10, 2003 to our reporting of HMS Neptune's loss in the Field Gun Competition.
**********
HMS Neptune’s Field Gun Team narrowly missed out on a place in the final of an annual Royal Navy competition by six hundredths of a second.
However, the team were cheered up after raising an impressive £2,000 for children’s hospice charity CHAS. The team took part in the annual Royal Navy Field Gun Competition at HMS Collingwood in Hampshire.
The run simulates the drill which would be undertaken to bring a naval field gun into action and involves the team moving the gun and limber across a course, dismantling it and putting it back together and firing three rounds of ammunition. A spokesman for the team said: “The team were quietly confident of doing well this year, they trained hard and were well prepared. Our team literally missed out on a place in the final by the blink of an eye.”
