ARGYLL and Bute is one of the most dangerous areas to drive in Scotland, a new survey has found.

According to statistics released this week, the area saw 32 fatal road accidents between 2012 and 2016 – making it the second most dangerous council area in the country.

Only the Orkney Islands had a higher fatal accident rate.

Figures compiled by telematics technology business Teletrac Navman found that the most dangerous road in Argyll and Bute was the A83 between Loch Lomond and Campbeltown.

Research earlier this year carried out for Regtransfers.co.uk picked out not the A83 but the A82 Glasgow-Inverness route as the second most dangerous road in Scotland – and one of the 50 most dangerous in Britain.

Three people have died in fatal crashes along one stretch of the A82 alone – between Balloch and Ardlui – since the middle of June.

Lomond North councillor Iain S. Paterson, whose ward includes stretches of both trunk roads, said: “Road accidents statistics are unacceptable and I am afraid it is down to drivers and motorcycle riders going over the speed limit and driving too aggressively.

“We will only reduce these statistics when people moderate their behaviour behind the wheel.”
