AN INVERKIP woman says she was barking up the right tree when she launched local group walks for dogs.

Moira McLellan, 44, started an Inverclyde Huskys page on Facebook and members have been meeting up once a month for group walks.

Moira, who owns and runs a dog care firm, started the group after noticing that a lot of people in the area walked their dogs alone.

She said: “Dogs need the same things that humans do, they like to socialise.

“This seemed like an easy way to do it.

"It started off small but now we have about 20 members who come frequently.”

Although the group is called Inverclyde Huskys because of the breed Moira owns, the group walks are open to everyone and dogs of all breeds.

Even dogs who have issues with behaviour, cars, bicycles, other dogs or anything else are welcome to attend.

Moira explained: “At the start of each walk I give a briefing and if there are any dogs people need to be aware of they will be let out separately.

“If a dog has a problem with something often they will walk with myself and if it helps I can walk that dog and the owner can watch me and take one of my dogs.

“It's all about helping each other and the owners meet people they maybe otherwise wouldn’t.

“I hoped that people would join in the group walks but the response has exceeded my expectations.”

The group meet on the last Saturday of the month at around 11am and walk in various locations round Inverclyde including Leap Moor and the Greenock Cut.

Moira added: “All we ask is that everyone turns up ready for all weathers and has fun, everyone is there to help and it really shows community spirit.”

The next group walk will take place this weekend on Saturday at 11am.

The group will visit Leapmoor Forest and those taking part are asked to meet at Cullen Crescent in Inverkip at 11am.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available at the end of the walk.

Moira asks that participants make a £1 donation that will go to local animal charities.
