A HOTEL owner from Helensburgh says he's "flattered" after his businesss was nominated for two awards.

Maurice Taylor and his daughter Nicola own the hospitality business Chardon Leisure Ltd, which is up for the accolades at the Glasgow Business Awards 2018 in the Best Performing Large Business and Best Family Business categories.

Maurice, 79, said: “I am very flattered that anyone could be bothered to give me an award at this time in my life.

“It is an absolute honour for Chardon Leisure to be recognised in this way, especially in categories which include some of the finest companies this country has ever produced.”

The pair are planning to take members of the team along to the October 4 ceremony.

“I enjoy doing what I do but it’s a team game, so I would book a table at the function and take along some staff. The staff are more important than the hotel itself.”

Maurice explained that he is still very much an active member in the company as he works four or five days a week and has no plans to retire any time soon.

“I don’t want to relax,” he added, “I’m in perfect health and I’m going like a train. I have no urge to sit around and look up the chimney.”

Chardon Leisure was set up in 1973 when Maurice sold his house for £5,000.

He said: “I sold the family house and wasn’t very popular with the wife, so that’s what started it.

“I have been in the hotel business a long long time, 50 years plus, but I still enjoy it.”

Since then the business has gone from strength to strength and has been nominated for multiple awards.

At one point, the pair owned 45 hotels across the country, but sold them to focus on six hotels in Scotland including the Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express in Glasgow.

The winner will be announced at a glittering awards dinner which takes place on Thursday, October 4 at the Hilton Glasgow.
