FAMILIES had a time to treasure as young and old enjoyed a weekend of pirate-themed fun at Finlaystone Country Estate.

Members of the public donned their best pirate costumes and 60 children took part in the self-led pirate trail which saw them receive a sheet of clues, walk the trail and write down all the answers.

When they returned they were rewarded with a small piece of pirate treasure.

As well as the pirate trail there was a fancy dress competition with prizes.

Birds of prey were also at Finlaystone over the weekend and the young pirates got a chance to hold them if they were brave enough.

With the pirate weekend marking the last of the summer events the staff and visitors are now looking forward to all they have planned for autumn.

Duncan Neil, of Finlaystone Ranger Service, said: “Our pirate event went really well.

"We were very pleased with the turnout and the weather was great.

“We run this event throughout the year but unfortunately this is the last one of the season as we go into autumn events.”

Highlights for autumn and winter include a Bushcraft Wild Night where participants camp out in the forest, learn some bushcraft skills, make Bannock bread and light fires.

Halloween will be celebrated on October 27 starting at 5.45pm, with spooky walks taking place every 15 minutes.

Santa will also be making his way to Finlaystone so children can visit him in his Grotto every weekend during December.
