HEALTH professionals were on hand to offer support and advice when a mobile cancer support service came to Greenock.

The Macmillan Cancer Support bus parked up in Clyde Square and members of the public dropped by for a chat and to pick up information and advice throughout the day.

Wayne Priestly, Macmillan cancer information and support specialist, says the support bus helps carers and family members to talk through any concerns or ask questions.

He said: “Family, friends and people at all stages of diagnosis are welcome to come along and get information about the support available and just chat things through.

“People are welcome to come with anything that is bothering them.

"Sometimes people don’t even know what support they need and can just come and chat and we can offer advice.”

Members of the public stopped at the bus at various stages of the day.

Katie Boyd Campbell, cancer information and support specialist, says that some people prefer the informal approach the bus brings.

She said: “There are no appointments and for many people it is quite anonymous.

"As we travel we are not always in the one place and people often find it easier talking to someone they don’t know.

“We have a confidential area and many people ask to use it so passers-by don’t see them, but it is whatever works best for the person.”

Also in attendance during the bus visit was Gavin Campbell from Inverclyde Leisure who runs Move More, a free programme for people living with cancer to help them stay active.

Since October Gavin has helped around 70 individuals.

He said: “We currently run a circuits class and a health walk and people are either referred to the programme or self-refer.

“Our activities are suitable for everyone, regardless of the stage in their cancer journey.

"People sit down with myself and we discuss ways of making physical activity part of their life.

“At the end of the classes we enjoy tea and coffee and a chat and it often helps to chat with people going through a similar experience.

“Feedback from people has been great - they say they have seen a change in themselves and many have started taking part in other physical activities.”

Move More is open to people at all stages of diagnosis, even those who have long finished treatment.
