PLANS have been drawn up for a multi-storey car park to be situated at Faslane Naval Base.

Argyll and Bute Council is among the parties being consulted by Mott McDonald architects on the proposed structure, which would hold 670 vehicles over four or five floors.

The plans have primarily been made by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and a planning application is due to be submitted early in the New Year.

The car park would be built on the existing quarry car park, which currently holds 250 vehicles, and would be accessed via the South Gate.

A report drawn up by Mott McDonald said: “The proposed development will alleviate the increase in car parking, which will be generated through the delivery of Clyde Infrastructure Programme at HM Naval Base Clyde.

“Individual car parking bays will be a minimum of 5m x 2.5m in size with minimum aisle widths of 6m.

“The proposed development will be a split level, permanent multi-storey car park, consisting of ground level plus three or four parking decks.

“Noise impacts are likely to be minor and temporary during the construction phase. Traffic noise during the operational phase is not envisaged to be a material issue.

“The proposed development…will optimally and efficiently accommodate vehicular parking in recognition of an evolving local issue relating to supply exceeding demand for parking space.”

The report also states that there is likely to be a “temporary and minor” impact on traffic within the base due to movement of lorries working on the site.

No other significant risks have been identified and dust control measures will be implemented to minimise emissions.

The document adds: “Having completed the EIA (environmental impact assessment) screening assessment, the nature of any potential environmental effects will be localised and temporary in nature, mainly during the construction phase.

“It is not considered that the proposed development would have likely significant environmental effects and therefore would not be classed as an EIA development.”

Argyll and Bute Council confirmed that it had given its opinion on the proposals as part of the consultation process.
